How’s That SEO Expert Working Out For You?

I love it when a plan comes together!

I was just reviewing a new client’s old website, and the SEO was pretty bad. In fact, it was so bad, I decided to check out the company that had built his site for him. (Their name was littered all through the source code of the client site, as they were piggybacking his site on their company’s hosting account.) This web designer’s site has, as its ONLY words in their Meta Description “Internet Marketing Optimization”. On our software measurement scale, the Web Service company that is supposed to be specializing in SEO only scores a 35 out of 100.

That’s pretty bad. And it shows when I ran their key words as a search on Google.

I can’t find them listed anywhere on Google. I went in five pages, and then gave up. As you know, page one gets 96% of the hits.

But, I decided to check out my own site, using the same exact methodology I used for them.

My Strategy Coach website is after the key words “Business Marketing Online“. There is quite a bit of competition for this particular phrase, and I’ve only been going after it for a few months (ever since we settled on the title of the book, “The Five Drivers of Business Marketing Online“).

What did I discover?

You can imagine how scared I was when I noticed that particular search generated over 376 MILLION results. Ouch.

But then I scanned down page one of Google, and before I saw my site name, I saw my own face.

That was incredibly satisfying.

I think it’s safe to say that we can probably do both.

Why Explaining Kills Sales

There is a fundamental difference between the learning moment and the decision moment, and most business owners collapse them without awareness. In a learning moment, additional context can help. You are building understanding, exploring options, gathering perspective. The goal is comprehension. But in a decision moment, extra context creates friction. The goal is not to understand more. The goal is to choose. When you introduce more variables at the decision point, you are not clarifying. You are asking the prospect’s brain to do more work.
